Date
2022
Location
Gujarat, India.
More than 80% of the goods are transported through Ships globally that plays a major role, lifting country’s economic factors. Ships usually have a lifespan of 25-30 years. These ships are used for their trading and owned by developed countries, and then usually sent to demolish to developing countries practicing Shipbreaking.
Alang is one such census town in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, India that has a 15 Km long stretched Ship breaking yard, active since 1983 and has been scrapping many domestic and foreign vessels, yet has been identified always as a scavenger town with unstable growth and recognition.
The idea is to align the gaps together and have a narrative built form that identifies industries past and portrays its importance for upbringing this self-sustaining economical fabric.
The programs focused on balancing the undefined line between Alang’s Shipbreaking industry’s valuable past and present through various urban inserts, that includes commercial and informative spaces with a vision to invite all existing and visiting stakeholders, in and around the site boundaries and create a sense of community.
It also tries to give multifunctional-recreational built-unbuilt spaces that provide an opportunity for placemaking to various individuals.
The envisioned architectural intervention can help acknowledge the Lost identity of Alang; known as a scavenger city but rather a city with treasure that beholds commercial, economic and social value in current times.
